Botanical Name: Tilia americana

The wood of the basswood tree is lightweight and fairly soft, but is a true hardwood. Basswood boards never twist, split or warp in use. It glues very well and is famous for its carvability.

Basswood has the nickname "Bee tree." The basswood tree holds two virtues dear to honey bee and bee keeper alike. First, the flower of the Basswood sweetens the warm summer air with a very fragrant scent. Secondly, the Basswood tree contains no harmful oils, so it will not adversely affect the honey or the bees.
