PECAN

Botanical Name: Carya illinoensis

Prior to the ice age pecan spanned all of Europe and the Mediterranean countries as well as North America. Today it is an American original, native only to the U.S. The pecan tree has a short trunk with many forked branches making long length lumber hard to obtain. It is very heavy, strong and tough but is also elastic and quite shock-resistant. It is hard to dry with big shrinkage, but once properly seasoned it is stable and reliable.

Did You Know?
A plan to save a 150 year old pecan in Mississippi, named "Big Ike," from being destroyed by the highway department eventually included the efforts of wealthy business people, the governor, the press, artists and peots and the fourth grade class of Kossuth Elementary School." Slogans such as "DON'T MESS WITH BIG IKE" and "BIG IKE LIVES" plus an increased awareness of bug tree identification are some of the results of this project.
